Breeds That Say No to Swimming • Kritter Kommunity

Swimming isn’t for every doggo, no matter how much we think all pups are born to paddle. 🏖️ Whether it’s their unique body shape, fur type, or just plain stubbornness (we’re looking at you, Bulldog), some breeds are simply better off sunbathing on the sand than splashing in the waves. This post is all about breeds that say no to swimming. Here’s a roundup of the pooches who would rather keep their paws dry! 🐕🩴Unlike poodles who were destined to swim, these doggos are a no go.Bulldogs 🐶❌🏊Bulldogs are iconic for their wrinkled faces, but not-so-much for their swimming skills. With their stocky build and short snout, they’re better at doggy-napping on the beach than doggy-paddling. Keep them on solid ground where they can show off that cute waddle!Basset Hounds 🐾🚫🌊Those long, floppy ears are adorable but not exactly hydrodynamic. Plus, Basset Hounds’ short legs and heavy bones make them sink faster than a stone. They’re more into sniffing out beach snacks than braving the deep blue sea.Dachshunds 🐕‍🦺🌊😳The “Wiener Dog” might be the king of cuteness, but their tiny legs and long bodies are not made for swimming. While they might paddle for a bit, it’s best to keep them on land where they can chase after toys instead of treading water.Pugs 🐾😅🚫With their flat faces and round bodies, Pugs are much happier poolside than in the pool. They do not have webbed feet so their paws are not natural paddles.Swimming can be hard on their breathing, and they tire easily. Save them the hassle, and let them chill on the lounge chair with their sun hat on. 😎🕶️Chow Chows 🦁❌🏊These fluffy lions of the dog world look like they’d float, but their dense double coat and serious attitude towards water make them more like a furry anchor. Chow Chows prefer to stay majestic and dry.Shih Tzus 🐾💦Shih Tzus’ long coats aren’t just fabulous—they’re also sponges in water. Add in their short snouts, and you’ve got a pup who’d rather be pampered on a beach towel than in the surf. While some pups would rather stay high and dry, that doesn’t mean their beach day can’t be full of fun! 🐾🌞 If your dog isn’t a fan of the water, don’t worry—there are plenty of exciting toys and activities to keep them entertained on shore. From interactive puzzles to plush squeaky companions, there’s a perfect dry-land alternative for every breed. Check out these paw-some toy suggestions that will keep your furry friend happily occupied while they steer clear of the surf! 🌊🚫🎾If you did not notice, many small dog breeds are not natural born water babies. This could be mother nature’s way of also protecting them against Alligators and Crocodiles. If your canine isn’t feeling the water, give them a shady spot, fresh water, and some tasty treats to enjoy their beach day their way. After all, it’s not about how many waves they catch, but how much tail-wagging fun they have! 🐾🏖️Lisa Illman is the Founder of Kritter Kommunity, LLC.
